In an exciting opening weekend of local soccer, Benjamin Logan’s boys team outlasted Calvary Christian in a penalty kick shootout Saturday night to win Ben Logan’s annual Quest Cup tournament.

The two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Carter Lyden deflected a Landon Stoodt throw-in to give Ben Logan a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game.

Calvary tied the score 10 minutes before halftime and neither team was able to score again. In the penalty kick shootout, Aiden Todd made the first attempt for Ben Logan and Liam Sweeney recorded a save to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Ethan Miller then converted his kick for the Raiders and Calvary matched that to make it 2-1.

Eric Hughes followed for the Raiders by putting his kick into the back of the net, while Sweeney recorded another save to put BL up 3-1.

Carter Lyden added a successful penalty kick for the Raiders. Officially the game will go down as a tie, but the penalty kick win for BL gave the Raiders their second straight Quest Cup title.

“I was really happy to see us step up and go four for four on penalty kick and Liam made two great saves so it’s nice to get the title,” said BL head coach Jamie Hughes. “However, not to take anything away from Calvary because they played very well in my opinion, but I really think we could have won the game in regulation to avoid the drama. We had a couple of really good opportunities that we didn’t convert and we made a few too many mistakes that gave Calvary the opportunity for the result. We have to be better in the final third
but we will continue to work and we look forward to traveling to Kenton next Thursday.”
