Bellefontaine Intermediate School recently hosted a Valentine’s Dance Party for a special cause.

Students and staff raised more than $2,500 for third-grade cancer survivor Ema Martinez. More than 300 of her classmates attended the fundraiser.

Ema has spent a considerable amount of time in Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. She has not been able to attend school this year until a few weeks ago. She currently attends school two hours a day.

The Student Lighthouse Team hosted the dance party. Fourth-grade teachers Kenna Davis and Kylie Croston served as advisers for the dance.

“The students were inspired by the dance we had last year benefiting teacher and cancer survivor Lori Horn,” Davis said.

“The kids wanted to host another event for a student here at the BIS. We were able to sit back with pride and watch as these leaders planned and made many of the decisions to make the dance a success. The kids worked extremely hard to make this happen. We are very proud of them.”

The Student Lighthouse Team consists of fourth- and fifth-grade students whose leadership skills and hard work set a good example for their peers.

The students are responsible for the marquee in front of the BIS, a monthly newsletter, caring corner clothes/supplies for kids in need, and lighthouse status classrooms with Lindy Martin. In addition, they are heavily involved in other events, such as this one.

In addition to the dance party in the gym, attendees also enjoyed a scavenger hunt, concessions in the cafeteria, and a raffle with items for the students.
