Roland C. Hoge, 85, of Bellefontaine, was transported by Bellefontaine EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital, and then was flown by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus for injuries sustained in a crash Wednesday, Aug. 28, after his pickup struck a house.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department report Hoge was northbound 1995 Chevrolet Silverado about 10:30 a.m. on Madriver Street approaching Rush Avenue. He reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded straight through the intersection.

His pickup left the roadway at Beech Avenue and struck a raised yard. The vehicle then became airborne and struck a house at 801 Rush Ave.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers said Hoge was breathing but unconscious. He was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital.

During follow-up investigation, officers learned from Hoge’s son that at the time of the crash, the driver had been en route to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment for a cut to his hand from a saw. His son said Hoge may have lost consciousness when driving.

The home’s occupants, Todd and Chinh Hughes, were not harmed physically. Todd was in a back room in the home when the incident occurred and Chinh was away at work, according to a previous Examiner story.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Bellefontaine Fire & EMS assisted at the scene.
