BASEBALL ROUND-UP: Pirates get split on road

The Riverside baseball team lost to host Newton 9-6 on Friday in nonleague action.

The Pirates are now 3-3 on the season.

Syler Clark went the distance for the Pirates, allowing five earned runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Gavin Orsborne had two RBIs and Cooper Crouch hit a double.

The Pirates got a run in the first. Newton built up a 6-1 lead.

Each team scored three times in the sixth. Riverside got two more in the seventh.

Brody Orsborne walked and later scored on a groundout in the first.

In the sixth, they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. A groundout by Clark got one run in, then an error on a ball hit by Crouch let two more in to make it 6-4.

Newton pushed it back to 9-4 in the home half.

Brody Orsborne got a one-out walk in the seventh, and took second on a groundout. 

Gavin Orsborne singled to score him. Crouch kept it going with a single. A wild pitch allowed Gavin Orsborne to score, but a strikeout ended the contest.

On Thursday, Riverside defeated Northridge 9-3 in nonleague play.

Landon Purtee was the winning pitcher, with 12 strikeouts and one walk over six innings. He held the Polar Bears to six hits and two runs. Camden Shoe pitched the final frame.

Gavin Orsborne, Brody Orsborne, Cooper Crouch, Purtee and Bryson Easton all had two hits each.

The Pirates scored one run in the first, with Northridge getting one in the second and one in the third.

Riverside then had three runs in the fifth and added five more in the seventh. Northridge got one in the seventh.

In the first, Brody Orsborne led off with a single. He stole second, took third on an error, and scored on a groundout by Purtee.

Singles by Purtee and Gavin Orsborne were followed by a double from Crouch. Crouch then stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Syler Clark, putting them ahead 4-2.

In the seventh, Clark walked, stole second and third, and was awarded home on a balk by Northridge.

Hayden Sanford walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Brody Orsborne drove in two with a single. He moved to third on steals and scored on a wild pitch.

Riverside is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. They are set to host Mechanicsburg at 11 a.m. today.
