Cakes, candies, cookies and cupcakes showcased the sweet side of the Logan County Fair on Tuesday, July 9, when winners in five categories were named during the open class home goods judging.

Eva Skaggs, department chair, emphasized the strong turnout they had this year, which included 48 cakes, 71 cookies and 35 candies in the running.

“I’m really pleased,” Skaggs commented. “With new people coming in the show is getting more competitive. If we keep getting more, we could expand—new categories or changing them up.”

A newer category this year included specialty items, where Amy Armentrout won Best of Show for her chocolate cupcakes, and Susan Weikart received the Reserve rosette for her baked donuts.

Hayley Nease swept the cookie awards, garnering Best of Show and Reserve for her peanut butter and chocolate chip entries, respectively.

Similarly, Karla Johnson took both top prizes in the cake contest, receiving Best of Show and Reserve for her pistachio and caramel apple upside-down bundt, respectively.

In the candy category, Kensley Lacher garnered Best of Show for her buckeyes, and Armentrout took the Reserve award for her fruit-flavored fudge.

On the healthier side of the contest, Esther Tyler won Best of Show in Baking Made Healthy for her Keto lemon cream cheese coffee cake. Barb McKeen received Reserve Best of Show in healthy baking for energy balls.
