City officials report residents throughout Bellefontaine may have heard and/or felt an explosion Wednesday afternoon, which was the result of a joint training exercise between the Bellefontaine Fire Department, Bellefontaine Police Department and the Allen County Bomb Squad.
Recently, it was reported to authorities that someone had located what they believed to be a stick of dynamite in shed on the city’s east side.
Upon their arrival, authorities confirmed the caller’s suspicion that the item in question was dynamite.
The Allen County Bomb Squad took possession of the dynamite, and determined that the safest course of action would be a controlled detonation of the explosive in a vacant area of the Bellefontaine Cemetery, a safe distance away from homes and businesses.
The dynamite was successfully and safely detonated just before 2 p.m., resulting in the loud boom heard throughout the city.
