ATV operator sustains serious injuries in crash

Robert A. Ferguson, 53, of Wapakoneta, was transported by Indian Lake EMS to Lima Memorial Health System for treatment of serious injuries sustained in an all-terrain vehicle crash Monday, April 3.

He reportedly was transferred by medical helicopter to a Toledo hospital.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report he was operating a eastbound ATV about 7:55 p.m. on State Route 720 near County Road 17 when he went left of center and overturned, coming to a rest on the north side of the roadway.

Deputies said Ferguson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and alcohol is suspected as a factor. Investigation continues and citations have not yet been issued.

Damage was moderate to the ATV, which was towed from the scene.

• John E. Miller, 34, of Piqua, was transported by Riverside EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries sustained in a crash Friday, April 7, after his vehicle struck a barn on County Road 70.

Deputies report he was operating an eastbound Dodge Stratus on C.R. 70 near Liberty Street in Miami Township about 3:50 p.m. when he traveled off the right side of the road, and then returned to the road, and off the right side again. His vehicle struck a barn at 11347 C.R. 70.

Damage was heavy to the car, which was towed from the scene.

Miller was cited for failure to control. Deputies said at the time of the crash, he was distracted by talking on a hand-held communication device.

Impaired driver charged with OVI

Jarrod M. Deskins, 76, of 831 Runkle St., West Liberty, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs relating to a traffic stop about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8.

Deputies on patrol in the area of U.S. Route 68 near Township Road 199 observed a speed violation with his vehicle of 72 mph in a 55 mph zone and initiated the stop in the area of south Main Street and Gunntown Road.

While speaking with the operator, Deskins, they noticed his movements were sluggish and his speech was slurred. Deputies also observed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Deskins stated he had smoked marijuana prior to leaving his home that day.

During a pat-down search of his person, the defendant stated he had marijuana on his person, and deputies recovered two containers from him. Inside the vehicle, Deskins said deputies would find a marijuana bowl in a book bag, which deputies recovered.
Field sobriety tests were administered and the defendant was placed under arrest. At the Logan County Jail, he submitted to a urine test, with results pending. He was also cited for speed.
