On Thursday, July 18, the Logan County Commissioners recognized John William “Bill” Comer as their monthly veteran flag recipient. The presentation was part of a program the commissioners began in 2023.

Comer, who served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, was active in Vietnam before being transferred to the Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He received numerous military honors, including a National Defense Service medal, the Vietnam Service medal, a Good Conduct medal and an Army commendation.
Though he grew up outside of Mechanicsburg, Comer and his wife, Mary, now call Seminole Island at Indian Lake home.
When offered the chance to speak, Comer limited his remarks to gratitude to the friends and family in attendance. “Thank you for the acknowledgement,” he said.
“He deserves this,” Comer’s sister-in-law Hope Martin commented with a wide grin. “He did two tours and he deserves this.”
