Area athletes qualify for state track and field meet

The West Liberty-Salem boys were second at the Region 8 track and field meet.

The second day of competition for the Region 8 meet in Division II track and field was held Saturday at Piqua.

Those pursuing bids for the state tournament were from Benjamin Logan, Indian Lake, the West Liberty-Salem boys and the Bellefontaine girls.

The Lady Chieftains scored 64 points and finished second in the team competition behind Oakwood (80).

“The team has had a great deal of adversity this season,” said BHS head coach Ben Davis.

The Bellefontaine girls were second in the team standings at the Region 8 track and field meet.

“However, their tenacity today resulted in many moments where they found points in the last kick, surge or attempt.”

Callie Shumaker took first place in the 300 meter hurdles in 45.47 seconds. Also qualifying for state was Kylie Adams in fourth place (46.08).

Adams was second (14.83) and Shumaker third (14.84) in the 100 meter hurdles. Adams’ time is a school record.

Grace Brown got third place in the 1600 meter run (5:11.89). She was eighth in the 3200m (11:49.22).

In field events, Adams was the champion in the long jump at 18 feet, 10 3/4 inches. Kelsie Snapp took second in the discus (127-4). 

The 4×100 team of Adams, Jillian Ullom, Shumaker and Shawna Burnell was fifth (50.86).

The West Liberty-Salem boys took second place in the team standings with 51.33 points. Brookville was the champion with 59. 

Coach Aaron Lauck said, “Our guys were amazing. They gave clutch performances in conditions that were unseasonably cold and windy. Jackson Steider assembled a stellar day winning his individual events as well as helping two relays to state.”

He added that “Our coaching staff is particularly proud that all four of our relays qualified for state.  That is an exceptional feat that showcases talent, training, and dedication.  To make this happen, several of our guys sacrificed potential individual glory to qualify their teammates.”

Steider claimed the title in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.08, breaking the regional record of 14.19 set by Dunbar’s Jason Scott in 2015. He also got first place in the 300 hurdles at 39.25. 

Placing fourth were the 4×200 relay of Troy Bradley, Jack Bahan, Taryn Bradley and Lincoln Henderson (1:31.15); the 4×100 team of Henderson, Bahan, Steider and Sam Kidd (43.02); and the 4x4x00 relay of Jake Lauck, Asher Cole, Bahan, and Troy Bradley (3:25.36).

In other results, Cole was seventh (4:32.01) and Caleb Larson ninth (4:37.94) in the 1600m. Troy Bradley was sixth in in the 400 dash (51.24); Taryn Bradley seventh in the 300 hurdles (41.19); Asher Knox seventh (9:49.40) and Larson 12th (10:25.27) in the 3200; and Quentin Rudolph was eighth in the 800 (2:01.05).

Ben Logan’s Abby Vance finished fourth in the long jump at 17 feet, 5 inches and advanced to Columbus.

Kyla Godwin was 11th in the discus (103-8). In the pole vault, Penelope Elliott was 10th (9-0) and Scarlett Elliott also was in action.

Indian Lake’s Gavin Henry was eighth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.31) and Reagan Rash placed 10th in the girls 800 meter run (2:33.33). 

Maddie Miller was seventh in discus (114-2) and Christopher Timms finished seventh in shot put (49-10 1/2).
