Indian Lake’s Headings wins Logan County Spelling Bee

Indian Lake Middle School seventh-grader Calin Headings captured first place Tuesday night, Jan. 13, at the 2026 Logan County Spelling Bee, held at the Holland Theatre.

Headings secured the championship by correctly spelling “substantially” to advance to the final round, then clinched the title with the word “marquee.” The annual countywide competition concluded after nine rounds.

Bellefontaine City Schools was well represented in the event, with Bellefontaine Middle School seventh-grader Owen Smith finishing as the runner-up. Smith is the son of Nate and Kate Smith.

A total of 12 students from Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Indian Lake, Riverside, and Calvary Christian schools competed in the bee. Bellefontaine City Schools participants included eighth-grader Eva Wilson, seventh-grader Owen Smith, and fifth-graders Lester Blosser and Lydia Wilson.

The spelling bee was hosted by the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center. Erica Baer-Woods served as emcee, while judges included Riverside Schools Gifted Specialist Andrea Watts, Botkins Schools Gifted Specialist Bobby Young, and Mandy Loehr.
