If there are any geese looking for eggs, they should check with West Liberty-Salem.

The Tigers boys soccer team battled its way to a 1-0 win over West Jefferson in Ohio Heritage Conference play on Monday night.

It was the 13th win as well as the 10th shutout of the season. They are 13-2-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference, second only to Fairbanks.

They have allowed just 10 goals all season, with half of those coming in a 5-0 loss to the Panthers early in the year.

Coach Tim Wolfe of WL-S said, “It was a hard fought win. West Jefferson has improved tremendously.”

He noted they had a number of scoring chances, but were eventually able to get one through and made it stand up.

It was also Senior Night for the Tigers, with the team’s six seniors honored in pregame ceremonies.

Tucker Searles, the Tigers’ net minder, moved into a tie for saves in a season with Joe Yoder. He had two in the win on Monday.

Each team had a scoring chance in the early going. The first half was a back and forth affair as a bit of wind and rain moved in. The Tigers’ best scoring chance in the first came with about six minutes to go.

After the intermission, the Tigers had a shot go high, then another one saved by West Jefferson.

Another near miss came with 23 minutes, and a shot from distance with 12 minutes to go was saved.

The breakthrough finally came with 11:30 to play. Conner Leichty sent a pass from the left wing, and freshman Kam Yang headed the ball into the net.

The Tigers clamped down after that, staying on the attack and not allowing the Roughriders a chance to get the equalizer.

West Liberty-Salem will wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Calvary Christian. Game time is 5 p.m.
