Safety Town still going strong at 64

Classes for the 64th annual Safety Town program, sponsored by the Bellefontaine Exchange Club, are set to conclude June 23.

The free program teaches pre-Kindergarten children about  pedestrian safety, traffic signals and signs, fire safety, good and bad touches, not getting in the car with strangers, the hazards of drugs and other important safety topics.

The first program took place in 1962 at the request of a parent whose son was killed while crossing the street.

Generations of Logan County residents have the shared experience of participating in the program.

Parents of some of this year’s Safety Town participants joked that the pedestrian safety course looks about identical today to when they were in the program in the 1990s.

Even so, the general sentiment is the program remains a fun and vital way to teach children about important safety topics.
