A man was cited for failing to confine his dog after the canine bit a passerby around 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the area of Harding Street and Dodge Avenue.

Jack Stahler, 64, of Bellefontaine, was cited for dogs at large after his golden doodle, Jax, bit a juvenile on the ankle while the victim was walking to work along Harding Street.

The victim described the dog as medium-sized and gold in color. He directed officers to the second house on the left along Harding Street, which officers identified as 401 Dodge Ave.

Police spoke with Stahler, who confirmed he owned a dog matching the description. Stahler stated that Jax was still a puppy and wore an electric fence collar intended to prevent him from leaving the property.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage from Stahler’s property, which showed the dog running onto the sidewalk and biting the victim’s ankle as he walked by. The bite caused him to step into the road to get away. The victim sustained three small scrapes but declined medical attention.

Stahler was issued a summons. He was also instructed to quarantine the dog for 14 days and provide proof of vaccinations to the health department.
