Officers responded Tuesday, Dec. 24, to a report of a counterfeit $100 bill used to purchase gift cards at Walgreens, 101 E. Sandusky Ave.

Officers were dispatched to the store at approximately 4:37 p.m., where they met with a store manager who reported the incident. Officers were told the suspect entered the store around 3:30 p.m. and purchased a Bass Pro Shop gift card and an Amazon gift card. The suspect requested $50 be loaded onto each card and paid using a $100 bill.

The cashier reportedly checked the bill with a counterfeit detection marker, which indicated the bill was legitimate. The sale was completed, and the suspect left the store.

Shortly afterward, the cashier examined the bill more closely and noticed “FOR MOTION PICTURE PURPOSES” printed on the front. Vorhees reviewed the store’s security footage, confirmed the transaction, and voided the gift cards before they were used.

The counterfeit bill, marked as “Prop Money” from the website propmoney.com, was handed over to the responding officer. It has been logged as evidence and placed in the police evidence room.

The incident remains under investigation.
