Sharleen Carter, 49, of West Liberty, was charged Thursday, Dec. 12, with failure to confine her dog after the animal reportedly attacked chickens and bit a neighbor, according to deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:29 p.m. to 1636 County Road 173 on a report of a dog bite. The caller informed deputies that her neighbor’s red and white husky had attacked her chickens. When Gilhorta attempted to grab the dog by its collar, the animal bit her right hand twice. She was able to confine the dog in her barn before contacting law enforcement.
Gilhorta reported to deputies that this was not the first incident involving the dog, and said that a similar attack occurred last month on Nov. 5. That attacked reportedly resulted in the death of two of her chickens. The caller told deputies she wanted to press charges against Carter.
Deputies spoke with Carter at her residence on County Road 173. She admitted to housing the dog but stated she no longer wanted the animal. Carter was issued a summons and given a mandatory court date.
The victim was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital by for treatment of her injuries. Deputies took photographs of her hand but were unable to obtain a written statement due to her condition.
The dog was transported to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
