Update: Three children were transported to two different hospitals Monday, Dec. 16, following a crash involving a horse-drawn wagon and an SUV at the intersection of state routes 638 and 274.

Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to that area shortly after 8 a.m. when the eastbound wagon failed to stop at a stop sign on S.R. 274 and entered the intersection. A southbound 2018 Ford Explorer driven by Ashley Nichelson, 42, of Belle Center, collided with the wagon, spinning it before both came to rest on the west side of the road.

Emergency responders transported a 7-year-old girl to Mary Rutan Hospital, while an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl were taken to St. Rita’s Trauma Hospital in Lima.

The wagon, covered and loaded with groceries, was en route for a delivery before the children headed to school. The horse pulling the wagon was unharmed and was later retrieved by members of the Amish community, who also removed the wrecked wagon from the scene.

Nichelson’s dashboard camera captured the crash, showing the wagon running the stop sign. Deputies reviewed the footage, which confirmed her account. No citations were issued.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated which road the buggy was traveling along prior to attempting a turn at the intersection of state routes 274 and 638.
