Bellefontaine City Schools Athletic Director Jason Calton recapped a very successful fall sports season during the board of education’s Monday evening meeting, Dec. 9.

Cross country standouts Hayden Maus and Grace Brown were honored. Hayden finished 15th at the Division II boys state meet last month in a time of 15:42. Grace placed 6th at the Division II girls state meet in a time of 18:24.

Hayden, a junior, and Grace, a sophomore, were also named the CBC Kenton Trail Division Runner of the Year.

Both runners were joined by their coaches and family Monday night.

Calton then praised the Lady Chiefs volleyball team, which posted its best season in 20 years. The girls finished 17-7.

Kelsie Snapp, Taylor Banta, Madi Zedeker and Ava Reeves earned all-league honors.

The Chiefs enjoyed a record-setting season on the gridiron as well.

Senior quarterback Tavien St. Clair finished his career with 9,794 passing yards and 104 touchdown passes.

St. Clair signed with Ohio State last Wednesday.

Senior wide receiver Braylon Newcomb led the CBC with 77 catches for 1,195 yards, and 17 touchdown receptions.

In August, Newcomb broke the school record for receiving yards in a game (235) at Sidney.

Newcomb signed his letter of intent with Eastern Kentucky University last week.

Finally, Calton said tailgating at home varsity football games was a big hit this fall.

Prepping for next year, the board approved their meeting schedule for 2025.

Board meetings will be conducted Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10, April 14, May 12,, June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8.

In personnel, the board accepted the retirement of third-grade teacher Mary Beaverson. Her final day will be June 1.

The board also accepted the retirement of Shanel Henry, who’s been the BCS executive director of instructional services for the last decade. Her retirement is effective Dec. 31. The board then approved the rehire of Henry for the ’24-’25 and the ’25-’26 school year.

Members also approved the American Exchange Project, which takes place in the summertime during June and July. The program offers seniors a chance to explore another American town for a week shortly after graduation.

The goal is for the students to visit a community that is vastly different from their own. Participants then welcome visiting students into their communities for the same experience.
