BCS District Report Card reviewed, student trips approved

Bellefontaine City Schools Board of Education took a close look at the district’s state report card at their Monday evening meeting, Oct. 14, with Executive Director of Instructional Services Shanel Henry outlining strengths and areas in need of improvement.

Overall, BCS earned a score of 3.5 out of 5.

Gap closing and the graduation rate were two highlights.The district earned a 4 in each category, which exceeds state standards. Gap closing measures a student’s own growth from one year to the next.

The weighted graduation rate was 95.9 percent. BCS also performed well in early literacy and college and career readiness.

Also during the meeting, members approved several student trips, including four out-of-state trips for BHS Robotics this school year.

The trips include competitions at: Riverbots in Monroe, Mich., on Dec. 13-14; Sugar Rush in Hershey, Pa., on Jan. 3-4; Gateway in Triadelphia, W.Va., on Feb. 2-3; and the Worlds in Dallas in early May.

Members also approved the annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, DC. About 100 students along with chaperones will visit the nation’s capital in May.

The board approved the monthly financial reports.

In other action, the board: 

• approved salary adjustments for additional training to: bachelor’s plus nine —Brooke Bahr; bachelor’s plus 18 — Rachael Stacklin; master’s — Jennifer Brown, Ciara Irick; master’s plus 45 — D.J. Howell; 

• appointed Alex Burton as an intervention specialist for the 2024-25 school year; 

• approved Megan Cira (elementary), Jennifer Cyr (intermediate), and Jordan Reser (middle school) as intervention assistance coordinators at their respective buildings.

• approved Nate Arbogast, Hailee Price, Mary Smith, and Lori Wilson were approved as home instruction tutors.

• accepted the resignation of Bellefontaine Intermediate School Nurse Jessica Dipple; Dreema Snyder was hired to succeed Dipple; 

• hired Stephen Buckingham and Lyric Lawrence as educational aides; 

• extended the following supplemental contracts: Brooke Bahr – Middle School Basketball Sideline Cheer; Krista Belser – Middle School Yearbook Adviser; Brad Brown – Middle School Girls Basketball Assistant; Sandi Chervenak – Middle School MUN Adviser; Ben Davis – High School Boys/Girls Track Head; Sean Egler – High School Boys Basketball Assistant; Brady Hiatt – High School Girls Wrestling Head; Drew Jackson – High School Boys Basketball Assistant; Josh Jones – High School Boys Basketball Assistant; Jane Kline – High School Bowling; Aaron LaBatt – High School Boys Wrestling Head; Caleb Mitchell – 8th Grade Boys Basketball Head; Mike Mosbarger – Middle School Boys Basketball Assistant; Mikael Neeley – Middle School Girls Wrestling Head; Tammy Overholser – High School Bowling; Debbie Sheehan – High School Swimming Assistant; Cody Sigrist – High School Track Assistant; Kyle Spence – Middle School Boys Wrestling Head; Henry Stolly – High School Boys Basketball Head; Dawsin Tillman – 7th Grade Boys Basketball Head; Jeremiah Vigansky – 7th Grade Girls Basketball Head; Theresa Vigansky – 8th Grade Girls Basketball Head; and Michelle Zedeker – High School Girls Basketball Assistant;

• approved volunteer coaches: Chelsea Horsley – High School Girls Wrestling; David Overholser, Jeremy Ryan – High School Bowling; Randy Varner – High School Girls Basketball;

• hired Eva Skaggs as an athletic worker; and 

• recognized the September and October Seniors of the Month with an achievement pin and a $15 gift card to Ron’s Pizza: September – Ava Campbell and Tavien St. Clair; and October – Nolan Core and Alexis Yoder. 

Finally, the board went into executive session to discuss the employment of personnel. No action was taken.

The next regular board meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Distance Learning Center at BHS.

Members also meet in special session to discuss district goals at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the board office.
