One person was transported to the hospital Saturday, Jan. 20, after being rescued from icy Indian Lake waters.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports a snowmobiler fell through the ice near Turkey Foot Island on the northside of Indian Lake, emphasizing the ongoing need for caution around frozen bodies of water.

According to ODNR spokesperson Andy Chow, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when natural resources officers received reports of a snowmobile going through the ice. Officers successfully pulled one person from the icy waters and transported them to Mary Rutan Hospital for further evaluation.

“No ice is 100% safe,” Chow said, urging people to exercise caution and be mindful of the potential risks associated with winter activities on frozen bodies of water.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of ice conditions, even during seemingly cold and wintry weather. ODNR officials emphasize the need for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when engaging in activities on frozen lakes and ponds.

As winter enthusiasts enjoy the season’s recreational opportunities, it is crucial to prioritize safety and adhere to guidelines provided by authorities. ODNR recommends checking ice thickness before venturing out, wearing appropriate safety gear, and being aware of potential hazards.
