Missing man found deceased in Bokes Creek

Deputies of the Union County Sheriff’s Office report a man who was reported missing Dec. 1 was found deceased Sunday, Dec 10, in Bokes Creek near the village of Magnetic Springs.

The preliminary investigation has determined the deceased is Steven C. Carpenter, age 63, of Magnetic Springs, deputies said.

Deputies said the investigation into Carpenter’s disappearance had been ongoing since he was reported missing. Dec. 2, deputies and detectives previously searched the Bokes Creek area on foot and by drone.

Sunday, at approximately 11:46 a.m., the Union County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a possible body floating in Bokes Creek, just west of the State Route 37 bridge.

Deputies and units from the Northwestern Fire District and the Marysville Fire Department responded to the scene and found a body floating face down, along the south bank of the creek.

First responders entered the creek and confirmed the victim was deceased. Investigators from the Union County Coroner’s Office were called to the scene.

The victim was transported to the Montgomery County Morgue, where an autopsy will be performed Monday, Dec. 11.

The circumstances surrounding Carpenter’s disappearance and death remain under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the coroner’s office.
