Surge in early voting drives strong turnout in Logan County

Very nearly half of all ballots in the Nov. 7 election were cast early, prior to Tuesday’s general Election Day, according to results from the Loan County Board of Elections.

Voter turnout in Logan County for the Nov. 7 election registered at 48.26 percent, driven by strong early voting totals that were the highest of any county in Ohio.

A total of 23.7 percent of registered voters cast their ballots early, according to information from the board of elections office. That percentage was the highest early voting turnout of any county in Ohio. In all, some 7,633 ballots were cast ahead of Tuesday’s in-person vote.

There were a total of 15,467 ballots submitted countywide.

Early voting has surged in popularity among Logan County voters in recent years.

Seven years ago, in the run up to the 2016 presidential election, approximately 6,900 absentee ballots were cast ahead of Election Day. At the time, that was the most absentee votes ever cast in Logan County.

This year, in an odd-year election, that total was eclipsed by over 800 votes.

Voters in Logan County rejected a pair of state issues that ultimately received majority support statewide.

State issue 1, an amendment to enshrine abortion rights into the Ohio Constitution, was approved statewide. However, Logan County voters rejected the measure by an unofficial tally, 9,634-5,743.

State Issue 2, a measure to legalize recreational marijuana in Ohio failed in Logan County 7,747 to 7,511, according to unofficial results, despite receiving majority support throughout Ohio.
