The United Way of Logan County is presenting another Poverty Simulation on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hilliker YMCA in Bellefontaine, 300 Sloan Blvd.

The thought-provoking, interactive “Cost of Poverty Experience” is hosted by Think Tank, Inc.

“We are primarily conducting this one as the initiation for our new Student United Way group of high school juniors and seniors, but we have additional spaces that we can open up for other agencies and the general public,” said Dave Bezusko, United Way executive director.

The United Way hosts these simulations from time to time to raise awareness about the impact poverty has on everyone in Logan County, whether one lives in poverty or not.

Ten percent of Logan County families live in poverty, (defined by the Federal Government as a household of four earning $30,000 or less). But studies show that an additional 25 percent of the Logan County population does not make enough to consistently make ends meet each month.

Bezusko said that if you interact with the poor in your work or volunteer roles, the Cost of Poverty Experience will give you new insights to help you in your service. He said participants typically express that their eyes are opened to the challenges and choices families in poverty face on a daily basis.

“This immersive poverty simulation is incredibly interactive,” he said. “ You will be engaged physically, mentally and emotionally.”

The cost is free to attend, but space is limited and advance registration is required. Register online at www.uwlogan.org or call United Way at (937) 592-2886 to reserve your spots.
