Rural Bellefontaine resident Ricky Tevis’ dedicated efforts toward working with and showing market hogs paid off Monday evening, July 10, at the Logan County Junior Fair Swine Show. She received two grand champion awards for her market barrow and market gilt, who are quite the pair.

The Benjamin Logan High School sophomore said the names for her Flintstones themed, grand prize heavyweight hogs are “Fred” and “Wilma,” which grew from her dad Todd’s idea to name the barrow “Fred.”

“I’m so happy and surprised with the win tonight,” the 16-year-old said, also noting the careful tending to her pigs that are a part of her day-to-day life. “I wash and walk my pigs every day, and I always make sure that they are comfortable in their environment.”
“She tries her heart out, and this win means a lot to her and our family,” her mother Stephanie said.

Ricky and her family enjoy showing hogs all around Ohio and in other states, including attending previous competitions in Des Moines, Iowa, and Louisville, Ky.

Ricky’s best friend, Madilynn Zedeker, also was part of the swine competition Monday night. Both girls are members of the Logan County Livestock 4-H Club.

Halie Johnson, 11, repeated her success from two years ago when she first entered the contest as a 9-year-old. She once again captured the reserve grand champion award for her market gilt. Her award-winning, heavyweight reserve champion gilt this year is named “Cassy.”

An incoming sixth-grader at Bellefontaine Middle School this fall, Halie is also a Logan County Livestock 4-H member as well and she also showed a market barrow she named “Blade.”

The reserve grand champion barrow award went to Lane Hill, 13, of Quincy, for his middleweight division champion barrow. The Miami Valley Producers 4-H member said he has been participating in fair activities since he was 4 years old, and he previously showed rabbits as well.

Lane will be an eighth-grader at Indian Lake Middle School in the fall and he also received the lightweight champion barrow.
