City school board evaluates Superintendent Hall, Treasurer Wasson

The Bellefontaine Board of Education completed their annual evaluations of Superintendent Brad Hall and Treasurer Josh Wasson during the monthly meeting Monday night, July 10.

Board President Colin Yoder issued statements on both evaluations.

“The board has given Mr. Hall a positive review for his performance during the 22-23 school year.

“The board believes Mr. Wasson did a good job managing district finances, however, the board would like Mr. Wasson to improve communication with district teachers, staff, administrators, and the board.”

Both Hall and Wasson will be entering their second year of a five-year contract, beginning Aug. 1. Their current contracts continue through July 31, 2027.

Hall will be entering his 10th school year serving the district this fall. Wasson began his treasurer role at Bellefontaine City Schools in January of 2020.

Last month, the board approved 1.5 percent raises (on the base salary) for all staff for the next two years. Those raises apply to the superintendent and treasurer as well.
Six local residents also addressed the board during public participation portion of the meeting.

Three adults and three students spoke in support of recently retired Bellefontaine Middle School SRO (School Resource Officer) Allen Huffman. They gave examples of how Huffman’s service has impacted students and staff.

Huffman has been the SRO for the last seven years. He retired on May 31.

Superintendent Hall then stated the district plans on having an SRO at the middle school for the upcoming school year. The City of Bellefontaine is considering legislation on this type of retire/rehire situation.

In personnel, the board accepted these resignations: Mark Brunswick, high school social studies, effective July 10; Tracy Gregg, intervention specialist, effective July 7; and

Zachary Johnson, educational aide, effective July 10.
Brunswick taught at BCS for 29 years. He was also a longtime baseball and basketball coach.

Bill Tipple resigned from his original three-year contract as the BCS communications coordinator. He was then hired to teach TV Production at BHS. He also will continue as the district communications coordinator in the new school year.

In other action, the board approved, extended or appointed:
• the following new staff members: Michaela Baker, kindergarten; Dawn Spangler, elementary guidance counselor; and Alyssa Brown, educational aide;
• the hire of retirement staff member Pam Patton as a secretary II for the 2023-24 school year;
• a supplemental contract to Jenna Smith, football and basketball assistant cheer;
• student fees for the 2023-24 school year ($80 per student, which includes laptop bag, Google license, and device. Any student fees above $80 will be paid from the general fund. Upon successful completion, those students graduating in 2022-2025 may be able to purchase their laptops. Those graduating in 2026 and beyond may be eligible to receive their laptops at no cost);
• a food service agreement between BCS and Madison-Champaign County Educational Service Center;
• the secretary/LPN wage resolution, the adjusted supervisor salary schedule and the athletic spectator code of conduct policy.
The next board meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in the Distance Learning Center.
