James “Jim” Zerkle, 72 of Saint Paris, formerly of Urbana passed away, on July 1, 2023, in Vancrest of New Carlise.

He was born on June 3, 1951, in Urbana, Ohio. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1969. He continued his education at Urbana University for one year and then graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1974. He then received his master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 1976. Jim married the love of his life Kathy Kuckelheim on September 13, 1975, at Bowling Green State University.

Jim began his professional career teaching special education in Rittman, Ohio, Urbana High School, and Adriel Schools in West Liberty. He became principal at Epsy Elementary in Kenton, Ohio and eventually became the superintendent at Ridgemont and the Director of Special Education Regional Resource Center. Jim was also the work study coordinator for Champaign County. Finally, he retired from Graham School District after serving as superintendent for 22 years.

In his younger years, Jim was a lifeguard and swimming coach at Urbana City pool.

Jim enjoyed Indy car races, golfing, and watching his favorite sports teams the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. He was a member of the Harmony Lodge #8 F. & A.M. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Jim was a recipient of Amando’s heart which gifted him 9 more years of life.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Kathy Zerkle; daughters, Sarah and Katie Zerkle; brother, Charlie (Nancy) Zerkle; grandchildren, Kendalyn and Greyson Zerkle; and nieces and nephews, Nathan and Hannah Zerkle, Jason Stepp, David and Chris Fasano.

Jim is preceded in death by his mother, Jean Zerkle and aunt, Arlene Crist.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-6 pm Saturday, July 8, 2023, in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, Ohio.

Masonic services will begin at 6:00 pm in the funeral home provided by the Harmony Lodge #8 F. & A.M. Urbana, Ohio.  Funeral service to celebrate Jim’s life will follow with Pastor Jeremy Spence officiating.
