Riverside, WL-S advance in sectional baseball action

Seventh-seeded Riverside bounced fifth-seeded Botkins 5-1 in a Division IV sectional baseball tournament game Monday at Botkins.

The Pirates are now 9-13 and they will play at third-seeded Newton in the sectional semifinal round Wednesday.

It was a scoreless affair through three innings before Riverside put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.

The Pirates followed with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Botkins scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.

Warren Shockey started on the mound and went 3 1/3 innings to get the win. He allowed three hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Zander Crouch worked the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up five hits while striking out one and walking none.

Riverside’s offense generated nine hits on the day.

Andrew Knight went 2-3 and Crouch went 2-4 with a double to lead the Pirates. Shockey, Simon Godwin, Gavin Orsborne and Landon Purtee each had an RBI.

Tigers blank Anna

Eli Allen tossed a two-hit shutout to lead West Liberty-Salem past visiting Anna 2-0 in a Division III sectional baseball tournament game Monday.

The eighth-seeded Tigers are now 12-8 on the season and they advance to play at fourth-seeded Brookville in the sectional semifinal round Wednesday.

Allen struck out eight and walked two.

WL-S took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.

Brodey Deam went 2-3 and Sam Lauck and Jeremiah Johnson each had an RBI to lead the WL-S offense.

Lakers down Vikings

Indian Lake’s baseball team held off visiting Miami East for a 5-3 win in non-league action Monday.

The Lakers are now 17-8 on the season. The Vikings fall to 12-9.

The score was tied 1-1 after the opening inning.

The Lakers scored once in the third and once in the fourth to lead 3-1.

Indian Lake increased its lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth frame.

The Vikings came up with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but the Lakers were able to hang on for the victory.

Chase Baldwin worked four innings on the mound to get the win for the Lakers.

Dawson Finfrock went 3-3 with an RBI, Burke Lillard had a triple and Rece Kimmel had a pair of hits to lead the Indian Lake offense.

The Lakers open up tournament action Wednesday at home against Valley View.
