UPDATE from Thursday, May 4: The Second Harvest Food Bank of Champaign, Clark and Logan Counties’ Empty Bowls event scheduled for today, Thursday, May 4, at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center has been canceled because of issues at the building.

The event will be rescheduled for a later date, Second Harvest Food Bank representatives report.

A water pump has failed that feeds the standpipe at Campbell Hill (Ohio Hi-Point), which pressurizes an area of the east side of the city.

Organizers of the ninth annual Empty Bowls event hope to raise $15,000 this year to continue services to food insecure residents of Logan, Clark and Champaign counties.

The event will be in-person, with the opportunity for attendees to sit down and enjoy soup over a conversation with friends.

Bowls are $20 each, which includes the soup. Proceeds benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign, and Logan Counties.

Patrons will be able to chose from more than 300 hand-crafted bowls created by local artists and students. The soups are generously provided by local restaurants and caterers in Logan County, making it a true community event.

Audrey Vanzant, Second Harvest Food Bank CCL development manager, said the organization is thrilled to be back in-person with this popular annual activity.

“As the only food bank in Clark, Champaign, and Logan Counties, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes over six million pounds of food annually,” she said. “Second Harvest Food Bank’s daily operation consists of sourcing and gathering food, sorting and cataloging the food, then warehousing the inventory to be distributed to agency members throughout a three-county service area.”

In 2022, SHFB distributed nearly 1.2 million pounds of food to more than 11 non-profit member agencies in Logan County. These member agencies served over 950,000 meals to hungry families in the community.

“The past couple years have shaken our communities in a way we have never seen, resulting in more people utilizing our services here at Second Harvest Food Bank,” Vanzant said. “Between the pandemic and inflation, even a few years later, our numbers continue to be higher than normal and are likely to remain high. Your support does make a difference.”

Second Harvest Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. Second Harvest Food Bank is responsible for safe handling of all food products adhering to state and federal guidelines including providing member oversight to pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.
