BellefontainePolice Patch-200Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department charged an intoxicated motorist with drunk driving over the course of the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Shannon McCrary, 40, of Urbana, was charged with speeding and and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs following an 11:26 p.m. Friday, March 17, on Richard Avenue at south Main Street.

Officers on patrol observed the suspect’s vehicle reach speeds of 55 mph along the 35 mph stretch of south Main Street, as well as weaving in and out of its lanes of travel.

Upon making contact with McCrary, signs of alcohol impairment were observed. After initially greeting law enforcement with “hey babe,” McCrary became agitated as officers attempted field sobriety tests, at one point cursing at officers and threatening to have them fired.

She refused a breath test, was issued the citations and released to a sober driver.

Drug paraphernalia recovered from traffic stop

Devante Smith, 26, of Bellefontaine, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia following a traffic stop that occurred just before 5 p.m., Friday, March 17, in the area of north Detroit Street and west Brown Avenue.

Officers report the suspect was operating a vehicle with expired registration and fictitious plates and initiated the traffic stop. Signs of illegal activity were observed, including the suspect behaving nervously in his seat. A search of the vehicle turned up marijauana and related paraphernalia, as well as two cellophane cigarettes that contained white powdery substances.

Smith was lodged in the Logan County Jail. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
