Earl David Cushman, 90, of West Liberty, passed away Thursday morning, March 2, 2023, at the Lima Memorial Hospital.

Earl was born in North Lewisburg, Ohio, to the late Charles Franklin and Alta Mae (Yoder) Cushman. He married Martha Jane Hagans on September 15, 1957, in Beloit, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on May 8, 2015. Earl was also preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Picklesimer and his brother, James “Jim” F. Cushman.

Earl is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Ray Etgen of West Liberty; a son, Jay Cushman of Elyria; 6 grandchildren: Phillip (Michele) Etgen, Kyle (Jess) Etgen, Cindy (Kevin) Williams, Megan (Matt Hunter) Etgen, Mollie Etgen, and Miranda Etgen; great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Whitney, Konnor, Harper, Zach, and Dylan; sister, Mary Headley; and many nieces and nephews.

A veteran of the US Air Force, Earl served his country as a morse code translator during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Earl worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation in the highway department and retired after 40 years of work. He also installed carpet for many years and was a longtime Lions Club Park secretary. Earl was a member of the West Liberty Lions Club and the West Liberty United Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, caning chairs, and was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, as he loved watching all of their events being their biggest fan.

Friends may call on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 101 Zanesfield Road, West Liberty, Ohio 43357. Reverend Debby Stinton will officiate Earl’s funeral on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the West Liberty United Church of Christ. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
