The Four-Way Test Speech Contest is an opportunity for local high school students to learn about the Rotary Club and the Four-Way Test. The Bellefontaine Rotary Club has invited local high school contestants to present their speeches to the club at noon Monday, March 6.
The guidelines for contestants have been shared with local high school principals to start recruiting potential candidates.
Each high school has been asked to host their own in-school competition. The first place winner from each local high school will compete on March 6 at the Hilliker YMCA during the Rotary Club meeting from 12 to 1 p.m.
“It is certain that the speeches will provide the members with a thought-provoking experience, as well as an opportunity to meet outstanding youth from the local communities,” said Sally Stolly, Four-Way Test speech competition chair.
Students may work with their teachers, parents and/or Rotary members to prepare for the local competition. This contest places special emphasis on the application of the Four-Way Test in the speech to the concepts of leadership, service to others, and/or life experience.
All aspects of the Rotary Four Way Test noted below must be articulated in the four- to six-minute speech: “Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all Concerned? Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?”
Contestants will present their speech from memory, without the aid of podium/lectern, notes, displays or props.
The Bellefontaine Rotary Club will award prizes in the amount of $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.
The first place winner from the Bellefontaine Rotary Club competition will compete in the District Level Contest at Wright State University, Millett Hall in Dayton, at noon Sunday, March 26.
Four District prizes will be awarded: first place $400; second place $300, third place $200; and fourth place $100.
