2023 Raider Relay dives into a good cause

With activities like drunk goggle water balloon toss, a pool noodle joust and water kickball, the students at Benjamin Logan High School might have ended the day soaked but it was all for a good cause as part of the school’s Raider Relay. This yearly event raises money for the Logan County Cancer Society (LCCS).

Things started with a survivor breakfast in the middle school commons, then moved to the high school gym, where they held the opening ceremony. Cancer survivors along with those currently fighting the disease took the first lap. Students then headed outside for the day’s activities.

Seven staff members in the high school’s career tech department were in charge of making the relay happen. But the creative part of it came from a group of 17 student volunteers who provided the theme and games. This year, they chose Dive Into Relay as the theme, which meant lots of water-based fun.

“They come up with the idea and we make it work,” Mandi Wood, business and career tech teacher and organizer said. “It’s really a group effort.”

For 20 years, the school has been raising money to give to the battle against cancer, but this is the second year all the funds have stayed in Logan County, going directly to the LCCS.

“We’re trying to teach students they have an impact on their community by being a contributor,” Wood concluded. “We all know someone who’s been touched by cancer.”

Thanks to T-shirt and wristband sales along with the money they brought in through Improvising a Cure on April 20, the school already had over $8,000 before they even got started.

And, by the end of the day, they raised over $12,000, which they will give to Tammy Allison, LCCS chief operating officer.
