Learning Logan County Summer Day Camp launches
Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities members were updated at their May meeting about a retirement celebration that is planned for two longtime Discovery Center staff members later this month.
Preschool teacher Jill Butler and preschool nurse Deb Shotts are honored during a retirement open house from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Discovery Center, 1973 W. State Route 47, Bellefontaine.
The community, former and current co-workers, past and current students and their families are all invited to stop by to share memories and well wishes.
Both Butler and Shotts retire at the end of the school year.
Superintendent Krista Oldiges also announced the launch of the Learning Logan County Summer Day Camp for youths ages 12 to 17 who receive services from the board. The first session takes place June 4 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Camp activities will include field trips, business tours, skill development and training sessions designed to build confidence, independence and real-world knowledge. Prior registration is required for youths to attend the sessions.

Early Intervention Director Liz Rose reported to the board that the Early Intervention department recently participated in a one-day gross motor training led by Karen Lohnes, PT.
The training focused on enhancing staff skills in supporting motor development in infants and toddlers, helping to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of services provided to young children and their families.
Preschool Director Lisa Sulich updated the board on recent activities at the preschool. Children enjoyed a special visit from the Easter Bunny and also attended a Touch-A-Truck event, which gave the preschoolers the opportunity to explore various vehicles up close and learn about the important roles they play in the community.

In addition, the preschool spring program took place May 8 at Bellefontaine High School.
Oldiges also updated the board on the renovation project to turn the kitchen space at the Discovery Center into office space. The kitchen was tested and no asbestos was found allowing the project to be advertised for public bids in three to six weeks. Members approved moving forward with the public bid process.
Human Resources Director Staci Nichols reported on staffing updates, including three open teaching positions. Interviews are currently being conducted to fill those positions. The board reviewed and approved new position descriptions for two roles following the resignation of Hannah Boy, therapy services coordinator. Rather than replacing the position directly, the management team recommended restructuring the role into two separate positions to better support the preschool’s needs.
The board approved the creation of a part-time occupational therapist position (four days per week) and a preschool manager position. Those interested in applying may contact Nichols at [email protected].
The results of a recent community survey were shared with board members. The survey, which was completed by community members, stakeholders, and individuals and families served, provided valuable insights into the impact and effectiveness of LCBDD’s services. The majority of responses were overwhelmingly positive, highlighting strong community support.
SSA Director Jason Moyer reported that he is in the process of applying for a couple of grants for the Logan County Board of DD Foundation that can be utilized to assist individuals served.
In financials, Kari Eckard, business director, presented the financial report for March, highlighting that expenses were at 19 percent and revenue was at 52 percent compared to the annual budget. The revenue percentage was higher due to receiving the mobile home and real estate tax settlements.
Prior to the meeting, members participated in training by Moyer on what MUI’s (Major Unusual Incidents) are and a review of what the trends and patterns were for 2024.
In new business, the board approved several key items to support ongoing services, including
• a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Special Olympics of Ohio;
• two updated board policies and the 2025–2027 Strategic Plan;
• position descriptions and approval to begin hiring for a part-time Occupational Therapist and a Preschool Manager;
• the sale of a home located on east Chillicothe Avenue; and
• the purchase of a new home on Spring Street.
The meetings are typically conducted the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 1973 W. State Route 47, Bellefontaine, OH. The next board meeting is June 5.
