2 area troopers receive honors from their peers

Two Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers with ties to the Logan County area have received Trooper of the Year honors this week from their respective OSHP posts. 

Trooper Abdulla S. Ahmed has been selected as the 2025 Trooper of the Year at the Marysville Post, which serves Logan and Union counties. 

In addition, Trooper Coleton J. Piatt has been selected as the 2025 Springfield Post Trooper of the Year. He is a West Liberty native and a West Liberty-Salem High School graduate.

The selection of Trooper Ahmed, 25, is in recognition of outstanding service during 2025 at the Marysville Post. 

TROOPER AHMED

Fellow officers stationed at the Marysville Post chose Trooper Ahmed based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public, Post Commander Lt. M.D. Himes said in a release. 

Trooper Ahmed joined the Highway Patrol in 2022 and has served at the Marysville Post throughout his career. Originally from Baghdad, Iraq, Trooper Ahmed immigrated into the United States, gaining citizenship in 2019. He currently resides in Columbus. 

A 2018 graduate of Whetstone High School in Columbus, he attended Columbus State Community College. Trooper Ahmed has earned the patrol’s health and physical fitness award, traffic safety award, and has also served as a field training officer.

TROOPER PIATT

This marks the second consecutive year that Trooper Piatt has received the Springfield Post Trooper of the Year Award. The honor recognizes Trooper Piatt’s outstanding service throughout the 2025.

He was selected by his fellow troopers at the Springfield Post on based on his leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public, Post Commander Lt. Shawn Cook said in a release. 

“It’s truly an honor to be chosen by my co-workers and supervisors for this award two years in a row. Working every shift and establishing the friendships along the way is the best part,” Trooper Piatt said Friday. 

After beginning his career as a police officer with the Mechanicsburg Police Department, Trooper Piatt served as a deputy and K9 handler for the Logan County Sheriff’s Office for a number of years before joining the highway patrol in 2023. He has served at the Springfield Post throughout his career. 

Trooper Piatt is currently completing a criminal justice degree online through Southern New Hampshire University.
