Firing range proposed for sheriff’s office
A transmission tower on the east side of town in Bellefontaine needs repairs after it was struck by lightning.
Logan County Commissioners discussed how to properly maintain the nearly 20-year-old tower, located on Allen Farm along Eastern Avenue, during a Tuesday afternoon meeting.
The tower’s services include operating tornado sirens and the sheriff’s radios.
Commissioner John Bayliss said commissioners were recently made aware that there was damage to the lighting system on the tower.
Rinehart Tower Service of Columbus provided quotes to fix the damage to the lighting between $6,000 and $11,000.
In addition to the lighting, the tower requires other maintenance including an alignment of the tower, replacing old lighting, updating inspections and maintaining guidewires.
Also during the meeting, Lieutenant Ryan Furlong proposed the idea of installing a firing range behind the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, 284 County Road 32 South, Bellefontaine, in a cornfield.
Furlong said he hopes the range will cost less than $20,000. No timeline has been set for the range.
