In three weeks the Logan County Sheriff’s Office will have a new police dog.
Sheriff Randall Dodds told the Logan County Township Association Thursday evening that with the help of donations from the community, they were able to get another dog after the death of their previous dog in November.
“We were inundated with people bringing us money to help,” Dodds said.
The total cost for the dog, training and necessary materials was $21,000.
Dodds said it was money well spent.
Another new feature Dodds said the Sheriff’s Office has is a new drug counselor in the jail.
Dodds also reported that Logan County is seeing an increase in sex cases including gross sexual imposition and rapes.
“It’s really sad we have a lot more of that,” he said.
In addition, the sheriff’s office continues to work through drug cases involving methamphetamines.
Dodds said the methamphetamine is not being processed in Logan County, but bought in through cartels.
“It’s sad drugs are still a problem in Logan County, but they’re (the sheriff’s office) doing their best and doing a good job of it,” said David Jackson, Harrison Township trustee and Logan County Township Association vice president.
In other business, Logan County Commissioner Joe Antram discussed some of the capital budget requests the commissioners’ office has for the state.
The requests include funding for a body scanner for the sheriff’s office, all-inclusive playground equipment for Fox Island at Indian Lake, assistance for a law enforcement memorial which would include a statue listing those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and assistance for the agricultural society.
Ben Vollrath, Logan County Chamber of Commerce president, informed the Township Association that Logan County, in addition to Union and Madison counties, are facing a significant natural gas shortage.
“We are trying to figure out how we improve gas access,” he said.
Steve Terrill, Stokes Township trustee, was nominated to serve on the Logan County Community Improvement Corporation.
Vollrath said the position on the CIC gives opportunity to share ideas about economic development.
Jackson said the Logan County Electric Cooperative, 1587 County HIghway 32 North, Bellefontaine, will serve as the meeting place for the Logan County Township Association for the next year most likely due to Ohio Hi-Point Career Center renovations.
The next meeting is April 16 at 7 p.m.
