Domestic violence arrests reported
Alva B. Jones, 48, of Dublin, Ohio, was charged with domestic violence related to an incident Sunday evening at 217 Cretcher Ave., DeGraff.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence about 11:30 p.m. on a report from Jones’ girlfriend, who said she had locked herself in a bedroom, along with her 12-year-old son, after being struck in the face by the defendant.
Deputies first met with Jones, whom they observed was intoxicated. He told deputies that the couple had been in an argument and he said he did not lay a hand on his girlfriend or her son.
However, when speaking with the girlfriend, deputies observed a red mark on her cheek, which she said occurred when Jones struck her with an open hand during the argument.
The defendant was placed under arrest and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
• Edward A. Backs, 55, of St. Marys, was charged with domestic violence following an incident Sunday at Kickback Campin,’ 16049 N. State Route 235, Belle Center.
Deputies were dispatched to the campground about 11:50 p.m. and spoke with Backs’ girlfriend, who stated that she and Backs had come to the campground for the weekend and then had been in an altercation.
She told deputies that during the heated argument, he had thrown his cellular phone at her during the argument and it struck her left ear. She stated she then left the camper and asked her sister to contact law enforcement.
Other witnesses also provided deputies with statements.
While speaking with Backs, deputies noted that he showed signs of intoxication.
He was transported to the jail.
Sleepy driver strikes tree, fence in Lakeview
Derek A. Grieshop, 21, of Bellefontaine, was cited for failure to control related to a non-injury crash about 10 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies report he was operating an eastbound car on U.S. Route 33 at Stephenson Street in Lakeview when he drove left of center and drove off the left side of the road, striking a tree and a fence. The crash report indicates the driver fell asleep or was fatigued at the time of the crash.
Damage was moderate to the car and the driver was wearing his seat belt.
• Donald L. Kuba, 61, of DeGraff, did not report any injuries following a rollover crash Monday evening on County Road 39.
Deputies report he was operating a southbound pickup near Township Road 100 about 8:05 p.m. when he said he swerved to avoid a deer and then crossed the center line and went off the left side of the road. He then overcorrected and traveled off the right side of the road. The pickup struck a ditch and then overturned before coming to a rest in an unplanted field.
Damage was heavy to the vehicle, which was towed from the scene. The driver was cited for failure to control and the crash report indicates he was not wearing his seat belt.
• A failure to control citation also was issued to motorcyclist Marcus A. Deerwester, 30, of St. Paris, related to a Monday crash on County Road 35.
He reportedly was operating a southbound motorcycle near Township Road 75 about 6:20 p.m. when he lost control and the vehicle slid into a ditch on the west side of the road. Quincy EMS responded to the scene, but the driver did not report any injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, deputies said.
• Brenda R. Folkert, 62, of Lakeview, was cited for failure to yield related to a crash Friday afternoon.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report Folkert was operating an eastbound car on County Road 52 at County Road 23 about 12:50 p.m.
She reportedly came to a rolling stop and then drove into the path of a northbound car operated by Billie S. Sosby, 49, of Jackson Center.
The Sosby vehicle struck the Folkert car on the rear passenger side.
The drivers reported minor injuries but were not transported from the scene. Damage was heavy to both vehicles.
Deputies said Sosby was not wearing a seat belt, but Folkert was wearing a seat belt.
• A failure to yield citation also was issued to William R. Purk, 77, of Bellefontaine, related to a non-injury crash Sunday morning.
He reportedly was operating a westbound car about 10:30 a.m. on County Road 29 and stopped for the stop sign at County Road 1.
A southbound sport utility vehicle operated by Carol E. Wappelhorst, 72, of Bellefontaine, arrived at the intersection at the same time of the Purk vehicle and also came to a stop.
Wappelhorst then proceeded southbound.
The Purk vehicle proceeded into the intersection and struck the left rear of the SUV, causing light damage to both vehicles.

Vehicle break-ins investigated
Officers of the DeGraff Police Department reported Tuesday evening reports of unlocked vehicles that were entered in the areas of Moore and Koke streets in the village.
Officers were advising residents to lock their vehicles and secure their belongings. Suspicious activity can be reported to the department by calling 585-4188.
RUSSELLS POINT POLICE
Man arrested for domestic violence
Officers of the Russells Point Police Department were dispatched to Point Village Apartments, 400 Lincoln Blvd., Russells Point, in reference to a domestic dispute about 2:15 a.m. Sunday in which a male caller told dispatchers he had been stabbed.
When officers arrived they determined a stabbing had not occurred, but the male, David Rupert, 30, was cut on his hand. The injury occurred after he and his wife were involved in a physical altercation.
Officers learned Rupert knocked his wife to the ground, choked her and then struck her repeatedly.
Rupert’s wife was able to get him out of the apartment and lock the door at which point Rupert kicked the door in.
When officers placed him under arrest, he reportedly reared back and kicked the patrol car, denting the door.
He was placed on the ground until officers could get him under control and place him in additional leg restraints.
Officers said Rupert threatened to kill everyone on scene and sexually assault their families.
He was lodged in Logan County Jail for a felony count of domestic violence.
Additional charges may follow.
Driver cited in crash
Officers were dispatched to Taco Bell, 137 E. Main St., Russells Point, in reference to a single-vehicle crash about 11:50 a.m. Sunday.
Mary Moon, 74, of Lewistown, lost control of her vehicle when she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. Her vehicle traveled over the sidewalk near the entrance to the Taco Bell, through the front yard, over a planter and struck a guide wire and utility pole before coming to a rest partially in the roadway. No injuries were reported.
Moon was cited for failure to control.
Indian Lake EMS and the Indian Joint Fire District responded to the scene.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP POLICE
Man lodged for felony drug charge
Officers of the Washington Township Police Department observed Donald Huffman, 50, of Russells Point, who had an active warrant for his arrest, operating a vehicle about 12:40 p.m. Friday on U.S. Route 33 near Main Street and Sunnyside Avenue.
Officers performed a traffic stop in which a police dog was deployed. A bag of methamphetamine and marijuana was located.
Huffman was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
