Calvary Christian’s soccer team made its fifth consecutive Ohio Christian Athletic Conference final four appearance over the weekend in Circleville and came away with a state runner-up performance.
The Spartans defeated First Baptist Elyria 1-0 on Friday in the semifinals, but lost to Mars Hill Academy 2-0 on Saturday in the state finals. The Spartans finish the season with a 12-4-1 record.
“We were led by our five seniors Garrett Reinhard, Mataya Penhorwood, Thomas Rorrer, Gavin Wish and Amber Wenger,” said head coach Chris LaBelle. “These seniors will be missed as we wish them well into the next season of their lives.”
Calvary Christian dominated against First Baptist Elyria in the semifinals. Amber Wenger scored the team’s only goal off an assist from Isaac Wilson. First Baptist was held to zero shots on goal thanks to a strong defensive performance from the Spartans.
In the state championship game, Mars Hill took a 1-0 lead at halftime and was able to add a second goal midway through the second half for a 2-0 score. Calvary Christian had some scoring opportunities, but was unable to get on the scoreboard.
