Honda of America Mfg. interns participate in a Cost of Poverty Experience Tuesday in a simulation that was offered in partnership with the United Way of Logan County. The interactive event offered a glimpse into obstacles often encountered by low-income individuals and families to build empathy, raise awareness and help develop solutions for those struggling with financial instability. The small groups of interns worked together as a “family” in the simulation, taking on new roles, such as single parents, retired couples with medical issues and extended families with grandparents in the home. They had to complete daily life tasks by paying visits to various “agencies” staffed by Honda associates, such as the bank, grocery store, a minimum wage job, school, doctor’s visits, and county human services, with a limited amount of money, time and transportation to get to each location. In support of needs in local communities, Honda of America recently completed its annual United Way campaign, raising more than $1.1 million for United Way agencies serving West Central Ohio, including more than $140,000 for Logan County.
