Former Bellefontaine High School athletic standout Keith Roberts has been promoted to the position of interim head coach for the men’s and women’s track and cross country programs at Heidelberg College.

The move was announced by the school on Monday. Roberts had previously served as an assistant track coach at Heidelberg.

Roberts replaces Kevin Lucas, who resigned after four years at the helm to take the head track and field coaching position at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md.

“We are confident that Keith will continue to build on the success of our cross country and track and field programs at Heidelberg,” said Heidelberg athletic director Matt Palm in a press release. “He played an integral part in the overall success of the program a year ago, and has the determination to continue to keep Heidelberg among the leaders in the (Ohio Athletic Conference) as well as the nation.”

This is Roberts’ first stint as a head coach.

“I would like to thank Matt Palm and the entire athletic administration for allowing me the opportunity to coach a program that has such a high commitment to excellence both in competition and in the classroom,” said Roberts. “Coach Lucas built a strong program and I plan to continue to take Heidelberg to the next level.”

Last season Roberts worked mainly with the sprinters and hurdlers on the track and field squads at Heidelberg. One of his sprinters, Judy Bataille, won the indoor 55-meter national championship and earned All-American honors.

At Bellefontaine, Roberts excelled in track and in football. He won two state titles in the 110 hurdles for the Chieftains and was awarded a football scholarship at Kent State, where he eventually left the gridiron to concentrate on his track career. He graduated from Kent State in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communication and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in education.
