Powerbuilt tops Urbana for spot in district final
07/14/08 Bellefontaine Powerbuilt is one win away from reaching the state tournament. Powerbuilt defeated Urbana 12-2 in five innings on Saturday in the Acme district semifinal game at Blue Jacket Park. The win advances Bellefontaine to tonight’s championship game at 6 p.m. against Springfield. The championship game originally was scheduled for Sunday, but the tourney schedule was pushed back because of the rain that hit the area over the weekend. Springfield lost to Urbana in the opening round Friday, but came back to beat Kenton Ridge in the loser’s bracket semifinal. In a rematch against Urbana, Springfield won 4-0 Sunday afternoon to reach the championship round. Because Bellefontaine has yet to lose in district play, Springfield has to beat Powerbuilt twice tonight to earn the state berth. If needed, a second game will be played at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Josh Kauffman sparked Bellefontaine in the win over Urbana. Kauffman went the distance on the mound to get the victory. He scattered six hits, struck out five and walked two. Offensively, Kauffman went 3-4 with a triple to pace an attack that had 15 hits. “The kids are swinging the bats very well in the tournament,” said Bellefontaine coach Jeremy Burrey. “They have done a good job displaying patience and working the count to their favor.” Zach Mosbarger and Brock Mitchell each went 3-4 to aid the Powerbuilt offense. Mark Duffy added two hits and Jace Mills chipped in a double. Bellefontaine is now 27-5 on the season. “The team has worked very hard all summer to get to this level,” said Burrey. “We will need to continue to stay focused on each game as we go through the tournament.” The state Acme tournament begins Saturday in Coldwater.
