Demolition derby provides thrills on final night of fair
Examiner Staff Writer 07/14/08 This year’s edition of the demolition derby did not disappoint Sunday evening at the Logan County Fair as cars lost tires, a truck was flipped over and plenty of body damage was done to all of the competing vehicles. When the smoke cleared, the dirt settled and the mayhem had ceased, the judges ruled Ryan Place of Wapakoneta was the main event feature winner. He took home the first-place prize of $1,000. Chad Cole of Botkins came in second and won $200 and Jeff Elson of Pemberton finished in third and took home $100. Elson also earned the night’s hardest hit trophy. The main event featured seven cars with three local drivers in the hunt for a win. With two cars stuck on the concrete barrier wall, one on the wall and a car that lost a wheel, it was down to Place, Cole and Elson. After a threeway battle, Place eventually pinned both Cole and Elson into a corner of the derby pit and earned his derby championship. Two local drivers won their individual heats. John Baughman of East Liberty won the first heat of full-size cars, while Seth Gibson of Bellefontaine won the second heat. The truck heat winner was Chad Kantner of Wapak and the consolation heat win went to Levi Keeran of Marysville.
