Bellefontaine faces talented, experienced Wapak squad to kick off 2014 campaign
Bellefontaine’s football team will no longer be satisfied with moral victories.
Head coach Toby Smith knew it would take some time to rebuild the Bellefontaine football program when he took over a year ago. The Chiefs took some steps in the right direction last year, going 5-5.
That won’t be good enough this season, though, as an experienced Bellefontaine squad looks to turn the corner.
“It is time where we have to start beating those good teams on our schedule,” said Smith. “We were close at times last year, but now we have to win those games instead of just being close. As a program, we need to make that next step.”
Bellefontaine will try to make that happen against Wapakoneta on Friday in the debut of AcuSport Stadium.
The Redskins went 9-1 during the regular season last fall. They fell to Springfield Shawnee 41-34 in overtime in the first round of the playoffs.
“They have a very good football team,” said Smith. “They have a majority of their starters back from last year. They are athletic and have a lot of good skill players. We are going to have our hands full.”
