It was revealed during the television broadcast of Thursday’s NCAA tournament game between Dayton and Ohio State that UD head coach Archie Miller got in touch with OSU head coach Thad Matta during a Flyers’ slump earlier this season.
Having served as an assistant under Matta at Ohio State, Miller leaned on his former mentor for some advice to get through a tough stretch.
Following Ohio State’s loss to Dayton on Thursday, it is Matta that needs some counseling.
In one game, the 60-59 loss to the underdog Flyers encapsulated a season of inconsistency and frustration for Ohio State.
Ohio State started the season with 15 straight wins, but a lot of that success had to do with the inferior opponents on the non-league schedule.
When the meat of Big 10 play arrived, the Buckeyes wilted. They went just 10-8 in league action to finish in a tie for fourth, lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament and were then bounced by an 11 seed in their NCAA opener.
