West Liberty-Salem’s boys golf team is headed back to the Division III state tournament for the first time in over a quarter of a century.

The Tigers won the district tournament by 25 strokes and qualified as a team Thursday at a wet and murky Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

“This means everything to us,” said WL-Salem head coach Darrin Leichty. “It is our second-to-last goal to accomplish this season. The next goal involves the state tournament, but we did what we were looking to do today. We wanted to get better as the season went along as individuals and as a team.

“The guys worked so hard during the summer. They played in several tournaments and practiced all offseason. To see all that pay off is great. They have been so focused all year.”
