West Liberty-Salem’s boys cross country team exceeded its own expectations Saturday and came away with a third-place finish at the Bob Schul Invitational in Milton Union.
The Tigers, which are ranked 19th in the Division III state poll, were third out of 20 teams with 136 points. State power Minster won with 66 points and Russia was runner-up with 90.
“It was a great ice-breaking meet and the guys individually and collectively did so well,” said WL-Salem boys head coach Mike Louden. “The team’s overall finish was a little better than what we were anticipating entering the meet considering we were without two of our top five runners, which are battling some early season injuries. With that said, it gave some other guys an opportunity to step up early and they did just that.”
