Bellefontaine’s girls tennis team opened a new era Monday as first-year head coach James Howell led the Chiefs against host Marysville.
Bellefontaine was defeated 5-0 in its opening match.
The Chiefs were unable to take a set from the Monarchs.
Marysville’s Megan Marsh won 6-1, 6-0 over Kiersten Daum at first singles, the Monarchs’ Katie Martin took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kenzie Collinsworth at second singles and Regan Yoakam defeated Bellefontaine’s Hannah Weimer 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.
Howell was pleased with what he saw from Weimer at third singles.
“Hannah did a great job with her footwork, allowing her to be in position to make some really nice shots,” said Howell, who is replacing Jim Stein after Stein stepped down following more than 30 years in the sport.
Marysville’s first doubles team of Taylor Shirk and Haley Willoughby won 6-1, 6-2 over Hannah Vance and Traysa Downing.
The Monarchs won the second doubles match by forfeit.
Bellefontaine is back in action today at Wapakoneta.
