West Liberty-Salem’s boys golf team began its season in sparkling fashion Tuesday by winning the 20-team Allen East tournament at Hawthorne Hills Golf Course in Lima.
“It was exciting to see our confidence grow,” said WL-Salem head coach Darrin Leichty. “But the best part was hearing the players talk about areas that need fixed in their game. I think that speaks volumes about the expectations for the year and the level of commitment the players have.”
The Tigers shot a 321 to win by five strokes over host Allen East (326). Lima Shawnee was third (335), Van Buren took fourth (338) and Miami Valley rounded out the top five with a 345.
Jacob Rutan fired a 77 to lead the Tigers, while Nick Sims was one shot back with a 78. Rutan was fourth individually in the tournament and Sims was fifth.
Ethan McBean carded a round of 82, which was the 10th-best score recorded on the day.
Also for the Tigers, Casey Gay shot 84, Kannon Stillings had 84, Dilon Callicoat had a 93 and Trevor Davis finished with a 107.
The Tigers are back in action next Tuesday at the Champaign County tournament.
