Not every high school coach can end their career on the biggest stage of their respective sport.
That is where Bart Zirkle got to end his, though, at the state track and field meet, as he made the difficult decision to step down as the West Liberty-Salem boys head coach after eight seasons.
“It’s very tough for me to step away,” said Zirkle. “I’ve been involved in some way with track as an athlete or coach for 23 years. One consistent love in my life has been track and field, especially in West Liberty. I just have so many things going on in my life that this was the one thing I had to give up. I hope to come back to it eventually when my schedule allows coaching again.”
