Ledford receives MAC academic honor

Kent State junior second baseman Abbey Ledford, a West Liberty-Salem product, was named to the honorable mention Academic All-Mid-American Conference softball team that was announced Friday by the league office.

Ledford was the only everyday player for the Golden Flashes to record a perfect 4.0 GPA in each of the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters.

An early childhood education major with a cumulative 3.78 GPA, Ledford started all 49 games this season to help the Flashes go 27-21-1 overall and 16-6 in MAC play to win their first MAC East Division championship since 2010.

Ledford, who received the MAC Commissioner’s Award for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 of higher, scored 17 runs on 34 hits with five doubles and a triple this spring. She was second on the club with 19 RBI.

The KSU softball program set an all-time school athletic department semester record with a team 3.71 GPA this spring. That included 19 of the team’s 23 members posting a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Ledford was four-time Bellefontaine Examiner all-area player of the year while at WL-Salem.
