Overcoming adversity in the most unpredictable aspect of track and field is something two of Bellefontaine’s girls have become masters of.
Field events have the least margin for error, but senior Alexa Haushalter and sophomore Brenda Johnson have reached the highest level as they prepare for the Division I state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Haushalter qualified in the pole vault and Johnson qualified in the shot put. The duo continue a streak that now spans 33 consecutive years of Bellefontaine sending athletes to the state track and field meet.
“It’s wonderful to be sending Brenda and Alexa to the state meet this week,” said BHS head coach Ben Davis. “It was definitely not a sure thing this year to be sending anyone to the state meet.
“When you are relying on field event people to keep your state qualifier streak alive, you have to take a deep breath because anything can happen. We’ve had regional champions in the past not make it back to state the next season.”
